04/07/2010 - Anaheim, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Anze Kopitar netted the game-winning goal in the shootout to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a 5-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center.
Alex Frolov, Justin Williams and Michal Handzus all scored in the third period for the Kings, who rallied from 4-1 deficit to win for the third time in four games. Dustin Brown also scored in the victory. The Kings, who already locked up a playoff berth, currently hold the sixth seed in the Western Conference with three games remaining.
Jonathan Quick allowed three goals on eight shots and was pulled in the second period. Erik Ersberg made 12 saves in relief for the Kings.
Teemu Selanne scored twice for the Ducks, who entered the contest with a chance to continue their push for a playoff berth. However, as the shootout in this game was in its beginning stages, the Ducks were already eliminated.
In Vancouver, at approximately 12:35 a.m (et), the Colorado Avalanche beat the Canucks -- also in a shootout -- and in the process clinched the eighth and final playoff spot in the West, thus eliminating Anaheim before the first shootout round of the Ducks-Kings game was finished.
Jason Blake and Bobby Ryan also scored for the Ducks, who have earned at least one point in each of their last six games (4-0-2) but will not play beyond their regular season finale on Sunday against Edmonton.
Curtis McElhinney allowed four goals on 40 shots in the loss.
The Kings trailed 4-3 in the latter stages of the third period but knotted the score on Handzus' 19th goal with 1:09 remaining in regulation. Williams carried the puck down the left side and, from the bottom of the circle, sent a backhand pass into the low slot for a successful backhander by Handzus from near the top of the crease.
After a scoreless overtime, the contest went to the shootout. As the Avalanche were celebrating their playoff berth up in British Columbia, Jack Johnson's wrister from in close tied the shootout at one apiece. After Saku Koivu missed the net for Anaheim, Kopitar used the famous "Peter Forsberg" maneuver to beat McElhinney for the win.
The Ducks scored the first three goals of the contest and controlled the tempo of the game. Blake's 16th goal opened the scoring on the power play at the 5:28 mark of the first period. With Sean O'Donnell in the penalty box for hooking, Ryan carried the puck down the left-wing side and appeared to be headed to the other side of the ice. However, from behind the net, Ryan sent a quick backhand pass to Blake, whose snap shot one-timer from near the left post below the circle lit the lamp.
With 3:12 to go in the first, Selanne gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Blake's backhand pass fro the left side above the circle made its way across the slot for Selanne, who poked in his own rebound from near the top of the crease.
A very costly mistake by Quick and Randy Jones led to Anaheim's third goal. On a routine dump-in, Quick went behind the net to stop the puck. However, the netminder mishandled the disc and then Jones did the same. The puck squirted free and caromed directly onto the stick of Ryan, who easily deposited the puck into the open net from the crease 2:01 into the second stanza. Quick was still behind the goal when Ryan began to celebrate.
Midway through the second, the Kings got on the board when Brown batted the puck from midair into the back of the cage from the top of the crease.
Selanne's second goal of the game, a power-play tally at 12:19, made it 4-1.
The Kings drew within two via the power play with 3:19 to play before the second intermission. With James Wisniewski in the box for interference, the Kings worked the puck around their offensive zone until Frolov held control along the goal line to the left of the net. Frolov then drifted in and attempted a stuffer at the near post -- the puck bounced off a stick in front before it bounced over the goal line.
A nice individual effort by Williams cut the LA deficit to 4-3 at the 7:56 mark of the third. Williams maneuvered across the slot, weaved his way around several defenders and tucked home a stuffer at the right post.
Game Notes
The Kings were 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Ducks ended 2-for-3 with the extra skater...Selanne has 26 goals this season...The Kings had lost six of their last eight in this building coming into the game.
