Serena upsets Petrova; Mauresmo, Kuznetsova roll at Aussie Open

01/19/2007 - Melbourne, Australia (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Serena Williams rallied for an impressive upset of fifth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova while top seeds Amelie Mauresmo and Svetlana Kuznetsova were easy winners in third round action of the Australian Open.

Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam winner who is currently ranked 95th in the world dropped the first set and overcame 39 unforced errors to down Petrova 1-6, 7-5. 6-3.

Williams will next face 11th-seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic, who took out Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 6-3, 6-4.

Mauresmo, the defending Australian Open champ and second-seed out of France, cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic while third-seeded Russian Kuznetsova smashed fellow countrywoman Maria Kirilenko, 6-1, 6-4.

Mauresmo's next opponent is Lucie Safarova, who advanced to the fourth round after Anastasiya Yakimova retired after losing the first set 6-3.

Seventh-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva advanced past Italian Maria Elena Camerin, 6-1, 6-3.
